Addressing gender-based violence among youth through restorative justice

Background

Gender-based violence is a phenomenon deeply rooted in our modern societies, and continues to be one of the most notable human rights violations.  Both women and men experience gender-based violence but the majority of victims are women and girls.

Furthermore, GBC continues to be a widespread phenomenon impacting on young people's lives regardless of their religion, ethnicity, socio-economic status or level of education. There is also evidence to suggest that youth workers need more capacity to deal with this persistent phenomenon at the EU level, putting emphasis on supporting marginalized groups of girls and young women as they tend to be more exposed to GBV.

Therefore, the Restorative Justice for All International Institute (RJ4All) put together the project “Chance for Change: Empowerment & Restoration” (C4C) to help root out GBV among youth and help all those working in youth settings to identify and prevent this phenomenon. As one of the world’s leading international expert on restorative justice, we wanted to pilot knew knowledge and tools using the restorative ethos and practice, while acknowledging the power of media education.

C4C aims to tackle stereotyped attitudes and behaviours shaping gender inequality leading to discrimination and violence among young people through a bottom-up approach. That is why C4C created a youth-led, media-based educational model for youth workers focusing on restorative justice preventative methods that will help reduce stereotyped attitudes within informal and formal educational environments, promoting a safe and inclusive culture that will help reduce the likelihood of GBV amongst young people.

* Gender-based violence and violence against women are terms that are often used interchangeably as it has been widely acknowledged that most gender-based violence is inflicted on women and girls, by men. However, using the ‘gender-based’ aspect is important as it highlights the fact that many forms of violence against women are rooted in power inequalities between women and men.

Specific Objectives

“GBV Youth Workers Competences Framework” and "Self-Assessment e-Tool"

The first project output is the "GBV Youth Workers' Competences Framework" and the integrated "self-assessment e-tool".

The Competences Framework consists of 14 competencies, which have been identified as not included in the fundamental and comprehensive Competencies Frameworks for youth workers already available in the EC literature (e.g. see ETS Competence Framework for Youth Workers by Salto Youth).

The second key element presented in this e-book is the ‘Competence Self-Assessment Tool’. This has been developed as an online tool that enables users to understand what each competence in the framework means and to assess their individual ‘level of proficiency’ in each competence. The tool is designed to match the competence areas and competences set out in the Competence Framework.

Giving us a Chance: CPD certified E-courses

The second output was the development and piloting of two CPD certified e-courses for youth workers and peer educators with the key aim of increasing their knowledge, skills and confidence when working with young people in the area of GBV and gender discrimination. These e-courses are:

Giving us a Chance e-book

The Giving us a Chance e-book is the concluding out of the project. It brings together all the research, pilots, learning and findings of the project into one e-book. The e-book is published by RJ4All Publications and features in two formats:

1. Short version with all the executive summaries of the national chapters in English including a comparative chapter in English

2. Long version with chapters reflecting the findings from each participating country and written in local languages.
