We are bringing Restorative Justice to Schools

Through our workshops we are delivering activities in schools to prepare young people to become Peer Mediators as well as increase awareness of the risks and harms associated with gangs and violent radicalisation.

What is Peer Mediation?

Peer mediation is a restorative practice that provides an opportunity for student accountability. An entire school community gains value in learning how to mediate situations between peers.

It is problem-solving by youth with youth. It is a process by which two or more students involved in a dispute meet in a private and safe place to work out their problems with the assistance of trained student mediators.

Peer mediation is a six-step process that consists of:

Agree to Mediate: there must be consent from all parties involved, including the mediator, to mediate the conflict
Gathering Points of View: mediators must allow all individuals the opportunity to tell their story, while identifying and understanding the multiple perspectives being discussed
Focus on Needs and Interests: Mediators must center the focus of the conversation on what the involved parties need to resolve the conflict
Create Win-Win Solutions: Focus on creating resolutions that are specific, balanced, reasonable, and thoroughly solve the problem
Evaluate Options: Consider the various solutions and determine the solution that best solves the problem
Create and Sign An Agreement: The involved parties collectively write out the established agreement and sign the agreement.

We put this e-course together with other young people in the hope that it can give you the skills and knowledge to become more resilient when it comes to group violence. This e-course aims to train young people, students and non-professionals on the the values and practices of restorative justice and it works as a guide on how to become a peer mediator.

This course can be particularly useful as an online tool to be used by students in primary and secondary education in the UK but it has been designed for any person who wants to know more about the topic. This project has been funded by Southwark Council as part of the Positive Futures programme
