On 10th December 2022, International Human Rights Day, the Hong Kong Shue Yan University will host an International Conference in Hong Kong to engage international scholars in restorative justice to shed light on this alternative form of criminal justice procedure across a variety of disciplines, including psychology, criminology, and socio-neuroscience.
Professor Theo Gavrielides, the Founder and Director of the RJ4All International Institute will share his research and practice expertise in restorative justice and its therapeutic effect on parties involved in the process. Gavrielides’ latest monograph “Race, Power and Justice” outlines the strengths and weaknesses of using restorative justice processes alongside positive psychology and other sciences within criminology.
The idea of linking restorative justice with psychology and socio-neuroscience will be discussed by international experts such as Professor Mikhail Lyubansky of the University of Illinois, Prof. Deborah Denno of Fordham University and Prof. Miranda Forsyth of Australian National University. Practices in the Asian region including China, Singapore and Hong Kong will also be covered.
Professor Gavrielides said: “I was delighted to be invited by Hong Kong Shue Yan University at this critical point in time for the development of international restorative justice. As we debate its positive effects, we must take caution on the psychological and sociological impacts that it has on those involved in harm and their communities.”
The organisers are calling for mediators, lawyers, teachers, social workers and academics interested in the field’s theory and its results in practice to join them for the event.
Professor Dennis Wong, the lead organiser, said: "With the power of RJ, we are more able to regain love that has parted us, to receive what we have yearned for, and be able to let go and forgive."
The event will take place at 10 AM Hong Kong Time (GMT + 8), with the opportunity for global attendees to join via Zoom. A registration link and more details of the International Conference is available on this webpage: https://www.hksyu.edu/learn2lead
Ends.
