Young Healthy Minds

Supporting Young People's mental wellbeing through physical exercise

Young Healthy Minds (YHM) is a walking and cycling programme run for over 3 years by RJ4All Sports at the RJ4All Rotherhithe Community Centre.

The project builds on RJ4All's youth-led COVID19 "You are not Alone" project, which was set up in April 2020 to support young people who were facing either new mental health problems or whose current ones worsen due to the COVID19 pandemic.

YHM targets young people from South East London who are most at risk of being affected by COVID19 in relation to their mental health as well as those who have already been affected. This will also include their friends and families boosting wellbeing and community cohesion through the use of the restorative justice values of power sharing, equality and involvement in decision making.

All activities are free and beginner friendly!

Key Objectives

  • Improve mental health outcomes. Emphasis will be given on issues that we have already recorded as being prominent among the youth population of South East London, namely: anxiety (e.g. unknown future, cancelled exams), stress and fear seeing close friends and family getting ill, loneliness due to their isolation, depression as well as as eating disorders).
  • Improve wellbeing and reduce isolation
  • Increase confidence in walking and cycling especially post COVID19 and social distancing measures.
  • Improve awareness around health outcomes and how walking and cycling can be used to improve them
  • Improve skills and knowledge especially for groups that never considered taking up walking or cycling.
  • Help breakdown barriers and increase cultural awareness, while improving SE London's community and social cohesion.
  • Help address COVID19's impact on our target group's mental health, but also address the socio-economic consequences of the lockdown through a more equal London offer and better economic mobility.

Walk and Unwind

RJ4All are hosting a weekly walking group! The walks will start from the RJ4All Rotherhithe Community Centre (30 Plough Way, SE16 2LJ), then the group will revert back to the centre for FREE teas and coffees. Routes will take place in the Surrey Quays area. Email us at admin@rj4all.org to register your interest and let us know what day suits you best!
